Why Do We Age? Expert Insights from Greethel Reeds-Raude

“Aging is inevitable, but how we age is a choice.” – Greethel Reeds-Raude

At Face by Greethel, my philosophy is rooted in understanding aging and addressing it holistically. Over the past decade, I’ve dedicated my career to studying, testing, and refining natural solutions for visible signs of aging. Through my award-winning treatments, I’ve had the privilege of helping hundreds of women rediscover their youthful glow naturally.

But why do we age in the first place? What’s really happening beneath the surface of our skin? Let me share with you what I’ve learned about the science of aging—and how we can slow it down.

What’s Really Happening When We Age

Aging is a Paradox
Aging is both inevitable and transformative. While time itself remains constant, its effects on our bodies and minds are anything but. Some of us embrace aging as a natural evolution, while others see it as a challenge to address head-on. Regardless of how you feel, understanding why we age is the first step toward taking control of the process.

The Cellular Secret: Why Do We Age?

The answer begins in our cells. Our bodies are made up of trillions of cells that regenerate constantly, but each cell has a limit on how many times it can divide—what scientists call the Hayflick limit. At the heart of this process are telomeres, the protective caps at the ends of our chromosomes. With every cell division, these telomeres shorten. When they become too short, the cell can no longer divide and begins to age.

As we age, damage builds up in our cells—DNA mutations, oxidative stress, and protein accumulation are just a few examples. While our bodies are designed to repair this damage, the efficiency of these repairs decreases over time, leading to both visible and invisible signs of aging.

The Signs of Aging: What Changes in Our Bodies

Aging doesn’t just happen at the cellular level—it reshapes every part of our bodies:

  • Skin: Becomes thinner and less elastic as collagen and elastin production slows.
  • Muscles and Metabolism: Muscle mass decreases, and metabolism slows, affecting energy and weight.
  • Hormones: Shifts in hormones influence mood and vitality.
  • Brain and Nervous System: Memory, reaction speed, and learning ability may decline due to brain cell loss.

— David Bowie

External Accelerators: What Speeds Up Aging?

Environmental factors play a major role in how quickly we age:

  • Sun Exposure: UV rays damage skin cells, causing premature wrinkles and age spots.
  • Pollution: Harms cells and speeds up skin aging.
  • Stress and Lifestyle: Poor diet, lack of exercise, smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption all contribute to the aging process.

— George Bernard Shaw

Can We Slow Down Aging?

While aging is inevitable, its pace and impact are not set in stone. Here’s what I’ve learned works best to reduce its effects:

  • A balanced diet rich in antioxidants can protect your body from oxidative stress.
  • Exercise and face-lifting massage help keep your muscles strong and circulation healthy.
  • Prioritizing quality sleep and managing stress can promote overall wellness.
  • Protecting your skin from the sun can prevent UV-induced damage.

Through my work at Face by Greethel, I’ve developed holistic treatments like our Signature Face-Lifting Massage, combining organic skincare and advanced techniques to help slow aging and bring out your natural beauty.

Aging Is Part of Life’s Natural Beauty

For me, aging is not just about visible changes—it’s about the wisdom, growth, and self-awareness that come with each stage of life. I’ll never forget a conversation I had with the Estonian artist Jüri Arrak, who said at the age of 70, “I don’t miss any age. Each stage brought me something unique, and today, I love the age I’m at because of the life experience I have.”

His words have stayed with me over the years. Aging is not a loss but a transformation, a time to focus on self-care, intentional living, and celebrating the unique beauty of every stage.
